Ipswich is an urban region in southeast Queensland, located in the southwest of the Brisbane metropolitan area, 40km west of the CBD. It has a population of over 200,000, which is expected to grow to 435,000 by 2031.

History

In the 1820s, it began as a mining settlement. It was originally intended to be the capital of Queensland but Brisbane was chosen instead due to its accessibility for ships.

It was originally named “The Limestone Hills” but was renamed in 1843 after the town of Ipswich, England. It was proclaimed a city in 1904 and became a major coal-mining area in the early 1900s.

The city is known for its architectural, natural, and cultural heritage.

Recently, Ipswich has become a popular filming location. It’s home to more than 500 parks and conservation estates and is also known for its strong contribution to sport at a state and national level.
