Innisfail is a town in Far North Queensland. It lies in the Cassowary Coast Region and is known for bananas, sugar and cyclones. It is home to 7,176 people.
History
Five different indigenous groups once lived in the region. In 1872, European shipwreck survivors landed on the coast. Soon, explorers followed. Thomas Henry Fitzgerald arrived in 1879 to set up a sugar industry. He named his house Innisfallen. This referenced an island in Ireland.
In 1910, the settlement was named Innisfail. A rich farming industry attracted settlers and migrants. In the 1920s and 1930s, many migrants came from Italy, Greece, and Malta.
Cyclone Larry caused significant damage to the town in 2006.
LIfestyle and Entertainment
Innisfail has a rich diversity of cultures. Many festivals take place each year to celebrate this heritage.
Community spirit is strong in the small town. People rallied to rebuild the town after Cyclone Larry. Industry flourished.
The town has just one business district and two secondary schools.
