Ingham is located in the northern parts of Queensland about 17 kilometres inland from the coast. It has a population of 4,700 people. The closest bigger city is Townsville, which lies 110 kilometres south of Ingham.
History
Ingham was founded back in 1864. Prior to then, it was the land of the indigenous Warakamai people. The town got its name from the pioneer William Bairstow Ingham, who grew sugarcane in the region. To this day the area around Ingham is home to many sugarcane farms.
Lifestyle and Entertainment
Ingham has a rich Italian heritage. More than half the population is of Italian descent. To celebrate its roots, the town hosts an Australian-Italian Festival every year on the first weekend of August.
