Idalia is a suburb of Townsville 6 kilometres south of the main business district. Nestled between the neighbouring suburbs of Annandale, Oonoonba, Cluden, and Wulguru, it sits on the south side of the Ross River. It has a population of 2,000 people.

History

Idalia got its name from a local estate. Over the years it developed into a light-industrial settlement. It was also the location of the first meat-freezing company in Queensland – the Ross River Meatworks. In 1998 the city built the Fairfield Waters housing estate in Idalia. Since then the suburb has almost tripled in size.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

Despite its recent growth, Idalia is still relatively small. Nevertheless, you can find various heritage-listed in the area. One of them is the Ross River Meatworks Chimney. It is one of the tallest structures in Townsville and one of the major landmarks in the local area.
