History

Herberton was established in 1880 by John Newell. It is the oldest town on the Atherton Tablelands. It is often called the Village in the Hills.

The town became the richest tin mine in Australia. At its peak, the town boasted 17 pubs, 2 local newspapers, and a brewery. There are several heritage-listed sites left from the mining boom. These include the Great Northern Mine, and the Jack & Newell General Store.

Farming is the largest industry today. Herberton has many crops such as avocados, tomatoes, maize, lettuce, and pumpkins. There are many caravan parks, hotels, motels, and Bed & Breakfasts in the town.
