Geebung is a suburb in the City of Brisbane, and is roughly 12km from Brisbane’s CBD. It has a population of around 4,620, according to the 2011 census.

History

Geebung’s unusual name stems from the Australian genus of shrubs and trees, known as geebungs, in the nation’s east, and snottygobbles in the nation’s west and south. The suburb was home to farmers in the late 1800s, and didn’t experience population growth until after World War II. In July 2013, workers unearthed a fossil in the area, which is believed to be of a 50-million-year-old fresh water fish.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

Geebung is well-connected to the rest of Brisbane, with two railway stations in the nearby area. The suburb is primarily industrial and suburban, and has local schools and a regional shopping centre. Downfall Creek also runs through the suburb, and locals love to walk and cycle around the area’s greenery.
