Welcome to Gayndah, QLD
Based in Queensland, Gayndah is a locality and town in the North Burnett Region. According to the 2011 census, Gayndah has a population of over 1,700 people. The town lies 328km north of Brisbane.
History
James Charles Burnett first explored the area in 1847. Early European settlers arrived the following year and established a town by 1849. Records suggest that Gayndah might be Queensland’s oldest gazetted town. Gayndah opened a post office in 1850.
In 1868, Gayndah nearly became the capital of Queensland. However, it lost to Melbourne, because its shallow river didn’t allow for the entry of large cargo ships.
Lifestyle and Entertainment
Gayndah is the centre of QLD’s largest citrus-growing area. Every two years, the town hosts the Gayndah Orange Festival to celebrate their industry. Gayndah is so proud of its citrus trade that a man-made orange houses the town’s information centre.
The Gayndah Arts & Cultural Centre is a converted convent. This art centre features the Gaynah Art Gallery.
