Esk is an interesting, historic town in the Somerset Region in South East Queensland. It lies 64km north-west of Ipswich and around 100km north-west of Brisbane. The population is 1,755.
History
The town is named after the River Esk which runs from Dumfries and Galloway in Scotland to the Solway Firth in England. Captain Patrick Logan, Scottish-born, was the first to explore the land in 1830.
The area was settled in the 1840s by pastoralists. The town developed during the 1870s when the small but short-lived copper mines opened in Eskdale and Cressbrook Creek.
Lifestyle and Entertainment
Nestled beneath the impressive Glen Rock, Esk is a wonderful town with a range of gift and antique stores, cafes and restaurants. It is noted for its timber buildings, churches and houses – some of which are heritage-listed.
Visiting the elegant Bellevue Homestead is a must. Built in 1893, this fantastic estate has been restored by the National Trust of Queensland. Lake Wivenhoe is a great way to spend the day. It offers stunning views and walks, a children’s playground and water sports.
