Emerald is a town that is located on the Nogoa River around 300km away from the coast. It is in the Central Highlands Region of Queensland. It has a population of 15,225 according to the latest census.

History

Indigenous Australians lived in Emerald before settlers came from Europe. Ludwig Leichhardt was the first person to arrive from Europe in the mid-19th century. In 1859 a British Colony was set up. The indigenous Australians were treated badly by the new arrivals. They had their land violently taken from them, and many were murdered.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

One of the biggest artificial lakes in Australia is to the south of Emerald along with the Fairbairn Dam. Sapphire mining is an important industry in the area, and some huge sapphire fields lie to the west of Emerald.

Emerald is a university town, and one of the campuses of the Central Queensland University is located here.
