Douglas is a suburb of Townsville. It’s located 18km West of the central business district, and south of the Ross River. Douglas has a population of more than 7,100 people.

History

In 1966, construction began in Douglas for the University College of Townsville. This would later become the James Cook University. The campus was completed in 1971, and is separated from the Ross River by a residential estate. The Townsville Hospital was built next to the university in 2001.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

Aside from the hospital and university, Douglas is almost entirely residential. The housing is modern and popular with families and students, and new estates continue to be worked on. Douglas features several parks, including the picturesque Riverbend Park next to the Townsville & JCU Rowing Club. Pioneer Park and Cranbrook Park are just across the river in the neighbouring suburb of Cranbrook. Douglas is also known for the Palmetum botanical gardens.
