Dalby is a town in Queensland around 208 kilometres north-northwest of Brisbane. It is in the Darling Downs region and has an estimated population of 12,000.
History
The name Dalby comes from the village of Dalby on the Isle of Man. It is believed that Captain Samuel Perry chose the name when he surveyed the area in 1853. Dalby was also known as The Crossing in the early 1840s.
A man called Henry Dennis was the first settler in the area. There is a stone monument in Edward Street to mark the location where Dennis once camped. It wasn’t until 1859 when Dalby was made part of Queensland.
Lifestyle and Entertainment
Dalby is home to Dalby Shoppingworld, which has a Woolworths, Big W and many specialty stores. There are also lots of heritage sites in the town include Dalby Fire Station, St Columba’s Convent and Dalby War Memorial and Gates.
The area is becoming an energy-based economy with a number of coal mines, natural gas bores, as well as a big coal-fired power station. Dalby also has some good schools and two newspaper publishers.
