Coppabella is a small town in Central Queensland, located 159km south-west of Mackay. It has a population of over 600.

History

Owned and run entirely by Queensland Rail, Coppabella is not your average town. It began construction in 1971, and was finally completed in 1996. The town exists purely to service the junction between the Goonyella Mine and Saraji Mine railway lines. In fact, even the name “Coppabella” is an ancient word that means “crossing place”.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

Despite its origins, Coppabella doesn’t lack in leisure options. The mine monument at the town’s entrance is a stunning sight, and there’s plenty to do once you get inside. Coppabella includes a hotel, restaurants, a school, a caravan park, sports facilities and shops. Cluffies Park is part of the Mining Trail Drive, and offers breathtaking natural scenery to immerse yourself in. The park is also stuffed with info about the history of the local mining industry.
