Coopers Plains is a suburb of Brisbane, Queensland. It lies 11km south-west of the Central Business District. In the 2011 census, the suburb had a population of 4,208.

History

Coopers Plains was once known as Cowper’s Plains. Dr Henry Cowper was Assistant Surgeon-in-Charge at the Moreton Bay penal settlement between 1823 and 1832. The name pronunciation became corrupted over the years and was finally known as Coopers Plains in 1877.

Coopers Plains was a primarily a rural location throughout the 1940s. In 1942 the US army built an army barracks close to the railway station. After the war, the barracks became the Australian army Damour Barracks.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

The busy Queen Elizabeth II Jubilee Hospital is located in Coopers Plains. The suburb is also close to Griffith University Nathan Campus.

The town has a good transport infrastructure with a railway line and several bus services operating across the region.
