Collinsville is a Whitsunday town of 1,501 people. It sits in central Queensland, 273km north-west of Mackay and 88km south of Bowen. The Bowen Developmental Road passes through the area, linking towns in the coal-rich area.
History
Collinsville was known to the First Peoples as Moongunya, meaning ‘place of coal,’ but industrial coal mining didn’t begin in the area until 1912. Less than a decade later the town was named after Charles Collin, a Labor member of the local Legislative Assembly. More recently the town has been referred to as ‘Little Moscow’ due to radicalism in the mining unions.
Lifestyle and Entertainment
Collinsville Cemetery is a heritage-listed area, as is the Bowen River Hotel on the Strathbowen –Leichhardt Range Road. The 2 main mines are the Sonoma and Collinsville coal mine. The town is home to excellent shopping and sporting facilities.
