Clermont is an agricultural town and locality that lies the Isaac Region of Queensland. It is 282km from Mackay and 945km from Brisbane. It has a population of over 2,000.

History

The first European to pass through the area in 1845 was Ludwig Leichhardt. The town was established in 1861 after the discovery of gold in the area. A goldfield was declared in 1862 and the town preserve was proclaimed in 1864.

Clermont is named after the city of Clermont-Ferrand in France. Clermont-Ferrand was the ancestral home of Oscar de Satge, one of the first European graziers who owned the Wolfang Downs pastoral run.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

Clermont is a massive hub for the large coal mines in the region. It’s also home to a number of heritage-listed sites. These include Clermont Cemetery, Stone Farm Building, and Irlam’s Ant Bed Building.

It’s also home to a memorial that marks the 1916 flood which killed 65 people in the town.
