Chinchilla is a town in south eastern Queensland, in the Darling Downs area. It is 169km from Toowoomba, and 293km from Brisbane. Chinchilla is in the local government area of the Western Downs Region. It has a population of 5,487.

History

Chinchilla has an aborigine history before European settlers arrived. In 1878 the town opened its first post office. The Chinchilla War Memorial was unveiled in 1919. It commemorates lives from the Shire of Chinchilla which were lost in various conflicts. The film director George Miller was born in Chinchilla in 1945. Now Chinchilla has a number of schools and good transport links to nearby areas.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

The award-winning Chinchilla Melon Festival began in 1994. It celebrated the large number of Australia’s melons that are grown in the area. It features exciting events every year. These include Melon Chariot, Melon Bungee, and Melon Skiing. The town also has galleries, museums and sports fields, as well as Chinchilla Cultural Centre.
