Childers is a rural town in Queensland. It’s located in the Wide Bay-Burnett area, with the Bruce Highway passing through. Childers has a population of over 1,400.
History
Early European settlement of the Childers area began in the 1850s. Farms began to spring up, sowing the seeds of the region’s strong sugar cane industry. Childers became a township in 1885, named after a British Statesman called Hugh Childers. The Isis railway line was vital in the early growth of Childers, although this closed down in 1964.
Lifestyle and Entertainment
Despite recent urban development, Childers retains a huge list of Heritage-listed sites. Most are found on Churchill Street, and include Kerr’s Building, Hotel Childers, and the Paragon Theatre. Childers features plenty to do, from wineries to reptile houses to bird sanctuaries. The town hosts several festivals, such as the Multicultural Festival and the Agricultural Show. October marks the Crush Festival, celebrating the end of the year’s sugar cane crushing.
