Chermside West is a residential suburb in Brisbane, Queensland. It’s located 10km north of Brisbane’s central business district and has a population of 6,121. Parts of the suburb were formerly named Craigslea.

History

Edgar Huxtable surveyed the area in 1864. The bush was cleared and small farms were founded.

In the early 1950’s the area began to change. The Brisbane Council wanted the area to be a Greenbelt and remain farmland. However, the small farms were struggling as dairy and poultry farming started to need bigger land holdings. In 1956, William Basnett, a dairy farmer, challenged the Green Belt proposal so he could sell his land. He was successful and developed his property. Slowly, other farmers did the same and the farms were replaced by small residential developments.
