Based in Queensland, Chelmer is one of Brisbane’s inner suburbs. It lies 7km west of Brisbane’s Central Business District. According to the 2011 census, Chelmer has a population of over 2,500 people.

History

Chelmer, Graceville and Sherwood originally went by the name of Boyland’s Pocket. In 1888, Oxley Point station changed its name to Riverton, before settling on Chelmer in 1889.

In 2011, Chelmer experienced severe floods, with many homes being submerged.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

These days, Chelmer is a residential area that boasts many Queenslander houses. Laurel Avenue is thought to be one of Brisbane’s more prestigious streets. This is because many parts of the avenue feature large camphor laurel trees.

Chalmer is home to two Australian Rules football clubs. These are the Western Magpies Australian Football Club and the Kenmore Australian Football Club. The teams compete in Division one of the AFLQ State League and AFLQ State Association.
