Welcome to Charleville, QLD
Known as the hub of South West Queensland, Charleville is the largest town and administrative centre of the Shire of Murweh. Sitting on the banks of the Warrego River, it is 683km west of Brisbane. The population is 3,728.
History
The area around Charleville was first explored by Edmund Kennedy 1847. The town took its name from the birth town of Irish pioneer surveyor, William Tully.
The town was, and still is, situated on a permanent waterhole which made the location a popular stopover for drovers and other travellers. After a hotel was built in 1865, the area began to thrive with the railway line reaching the town in 1888. This sadly brought about the decline of coach transport in the area.
Lifestyle and Entertainment
Charleville is the southern Queensland base for the Royal Flying Doctors Service. There are several tourist attractions including the Cosmos Observatory and Visitor Centre, a wildlife sanctuary and two museums.
The town also offers a range of sports amenities including an 18-hole golf course, swimming pool, bowling green, speedway and racing course.
