Carrara sits on the banks of the Nerang River and is a suburb of the Gold Coast. Primarily a residential area, it has a population of 11,569.

History

The name Carrara derives from the Aboriginal word meaning ‘long flat’. Settlement of the area dates back to the 1860s, with the land used for cotton growing, farming and grazing. The Manchester Cotton Company’s cotton plantation was located in this area.

The population began to grow in the early 1900s but it wasn’t until the 1980s that significant development occurred with the construction of many residential areas and golf courses.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

Carrara is well known for its fantastic sports facilities. There are at least five golf courses in the locality. The Carrara Sports Precinct will also host the 2018 Commonwealth Games. Both the opening and closing ceremonies will take place here.

The suburb lies close to the M1 motorway offering easy access to both the north and the south. The popular Carrara Markets are great for bagging a bargain with over 400 stalls to peruse.
