The small rural township of Canungra, also known as Owl Valley is a popular tourist destination. Situated close to Brisbane and the Gold Coast it takes its name from the native word “small owls”. The town’s logo is a book owl and the local Post Office released a special frank in 2005 that also featured the owl. The township has a population of only 746 people.

History

The township dates back to the timber industry and it was once one of the largest stands of timber in the country. One of Queensland’s largest sawmills was also located in the township and it finally closed down as the industry declined in the 1940’s.

Along with the booming timber trade, the railway also came to Canungra in 1915. That too ceased to operate however in 1955. The only trace of the timber industry that remains to this day is the historic Lahey’s Tramway Tunnel and the sawmill.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

The area remains busy with tourism and it is a major attraction for bushwalkers, birdwatchers, and hang-glider/paraglider enthusiasts. There is a war memorial in the township and a sports and recreation ground. There are also several places of heritage interest including Lahey’s
