Camp Hill is a residential suburb on the southern side of Brisbane, Queensland. It’s located 6km south-east of the Central Business District. The population is 10.533.
History
Camp Hill takes its name from the fact it was once a stopover area for those travelling between Brisbane and Cleveland. The first settlers in the area were farmers, often with German heritage. From the 1860s onwards, a handful of agricultural and dairy businesses were in operation, but it wasn’t until the 1880s that the housing and land boom began.
During the Second World War, the US Army influenced the development of the area. They built a large hospital which housed 3,000 patients and staff at its peak. Street names in Camp Hill include the names of WW1 ships and Australian capital cities.
Lifestyle and Entertainment
Camp Hill is popular with families. The area is heavily serviced by public transport with the suburb being a major thoroughfare for buses. There are a number of parks in and around Camp Hill. It is home to the White Hills Reserve which features a playground, sports facilities and picnic areas.
The large shopping centre, Centro Samuel Village, caters to everyone’s needs. Locals are also only a 5-10 minute drive from Queensland’s second largest shopping centre in Carindale.
