Camira is a residential suburb at the eastern end of Ipswich. It is 21km south-west of Brisbane’s central business district and has a population of 7,391. Nearby areas include the Greenbank Military Camp and Carole Park, an industrial estate.

History

The area achieved gazetted status in 1972. Its name comes from the Aboriginal word meaning “windy”.

The suburb formed in the 1970’s and the area grew quickly. It initially included the areas of Springfield, Springfield Lakes and Augustine Heights. However, these areas became suburbs in their own right.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

Camira’s primary school opened in 1974. There are local shops in Old Logan Road, containing local grocers and specialty stores. Several parks run along Sandy Creek from Camira to Carole Park.

The area’s Aboriginal history is preserved by a bora ring near Sandy Creek, on the south side of Kertes Road.
