Calen is a small village in the Mackay region of Queensland. It’s found along the Bruce Highway, and has a population of over 450.
History
Calen’s name derives from an Aboriginal word meaning “cloud”, although the language and dialect remain unknown. The town took shape in the 1920s, with a railway station, school and post office in business by 1933. A second town, Kolijo, developed almost simultaneously with Calen on the other side of Helen’s Creek. The two tiny settlements are just 1.5km apart.
Lifestyle and Entertainment
The Calen Hotel is Calen’s main pub. It suffered a fire in 2012, but came back new and improved just a year later. The surrounding Mackay region offers many things to see and experience, from breathtaking scenery to gourmet food tours. There are numerous beaches along the coast, and Eungella National Park is the longest stretch of subtropical rainforest in the entire country.
