Bucasia is a coastal town in Queensland. It serves as both its own township and a suburb of Mackay, and sits 15km north of Mackay’s central business district. Bucasia has a population of more than 4,200.

History

Founded in 1874, Bucasia has gone through a variety of names. It was first called Marara, but this was changed to Seaview before too long. As Seaview was very common, the name Bucasia was settled on in 1938. This was in honour of Father Pierre-Marie Bucas, Mackay’s first Roman Catholic priest. Father Bucas was an influential figure, establishing both an orphanage and a community for displaced Aboriginals. Bucasia quickly grew into a popular holiday destination, as well as a residential suburb.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

Bucasia Beach is picturesque and well-sheltered, and remains one of Mackay’s biggest tourist draws. Bucasia Beach House and Kohuna Beachside Resort are set up along the coast, along with Aloha Cafe & Bar. Bucasia has several parks, including Admiralty Park and Royals Sands Park.
