With one of the largest populations of any city in Australia, Brisbane is a bustling cosmopolitan area. It is also one of the oldest cities in the country, built on the homelands of the Turrbal and Jagera peoples. It was named after the Brisbane River that also took its name from the governor of New South Wales during 1821 to 1825, a Scotsman Sir Thomas Brisbane. The population of the Brisbane metro area alone is in the region of 2.3 million.
History
The earliest European settlers inhabited the Brisbane area from around 1799 and the huge city that we know today started out as a small penal colony. With 14 soldier and some family members, plus 29 convicts the settlement was established in 1823. The task was carried out under the instruction of the Governor of New South Wales.
The first signs of a town were at the planning stage in 1840 and Brisbane wasn’t until 1902 that Brisbane was officially incorporated as a city. By 1925 over 20 shires and municipalities had been combined into the city area.
