History
The bay of Port Denison was discovered in 1859. It offered a good port North of Rockhampton. Two years later, Captain Sinclair led a party to the port, travelling by sea. George Dalrymple led a party travelling by land. The pair founded Bowen in 1861.
The reefs around Bowen have claimed several ships. The SS Gothenburg sank in 1875. More than 100 people died.
Air Force personnel had a base in Bowen during WWII.
LIfestyle and Entertainment
The tropical climate draws tourists to Bowen. It has eight beaches and pleasant, cooling trade winds.
The Bowen Tourist Information Centre is famous for its Big Mango. The structure cost $90,000 to build.
Bowen offers plenty of tourist infrastructure. It also has a popular golf course. Local families have their choice of four primary schools. There is one high school and a TAFE campus.
