History

The name Benowa is derived from the Bundjalung name for the bloodwood tree, which is ‘Boonow.’ The name has been adapted over the years. It was popularised by Robert Muir, who used the name for his sugar plantation near the Nerang River. This river was a popular place for European settlers who wanted to grow sugar cane.

Benowa is home to several professional Golf tournaments which are hosted in the Royal Pines Resort. The resort also has tennis courts used by professional players. Football and Baseball also have a big following in Benowa. The town has an increasingly diverse population, and is a great spot to relax due to the short distance from Surfers Paradise.
