The mainly rural town of Beaudesert is located in the Logan and Albert river valleys 91km outside of Brisbane. The area has a racecourse 2 Gyms, a public library, and a 50-metre swimming pool. The main economy of the area centres on farming and tourism. There is also a thriving equine community in Beaudesert. The town has a population of almost 6,000 people.
History
Settled in 1847 the town is now a small but busy centre. Named sometime around 1842, when the place was a sheep station, the streets of the early town were laid out in a grid pattern. The tramway was opened in 1903 and a local newspaper called the Beaudesert Times was started up in 1908. The area continued to grow right up until the 1980s. By this time it had a shoe factory, a meat plant, and some markets.
Lifestyle and Entertainment
The town has primary schools a state high school, and childcare centres too. The area also has a arts centre that provides facilities for local community groups including amateur theatre. The area is also well represented in sport and the R.S. Willis Park is the home of the Beaudesert Kingfishers.
Transport links include local buses and long distance/local rail travel through the Brisbane-Sydney Railway line. The branch line from the outer suburb of Bethania into the town ceased operations in 1996. It was reinstated by enthusiasts in 1999 as a tourist attraction but ceased again in 2004 following fire and financial issues.
