The rural town of Babinda is a suburb in the Cairns Region of Queensland. Approximately 60 miles south of Cairns, it has a population of 1,068.
History
It reputedly takes its name from the Aboriginal word for waterfall or rain. The settlement of the area dates from the 1880s, with the land mainly used for sugarcane and coffee growing. Babinda was established as a town in the 1910s. The first school opened in 1914 followed by a post office in 1915.
In March 2006, disaster struck the area when it was hit by Cyclone Larry. Around 80% of Babinda’s buildings were destroyed.
Lifestyle and Entertainment
Babinda’s stunning location is overlooked by two of Queensland’s highest mountains – Mt Bartle Frere and Mt Bellenden Kerr. The town’s main attractions are the Babinda Boulders and Josephine Falls

Babinda is renowned for its extremely high annual rainfall. Every year it competes with the town of Tully for the Golden Gumboot, the prize for being Australia’s wettest town.
