Aurukun is located in the Shire of Aurukun local government area, about 100km to the south of Weipa. It has a population of 1,295.

History

In 1904, the Aurukun Mission was set up. Indigenous Australians were brought in from all around the area, although many of them didn’t want to go. Aurukun also had a few other facilities at this time including a butcher’s, a sawmill and somewhere to buy bread. In 1972, the Aurukun post office was established.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

Many artists are members of the Wik and Kugu Art Centre. These people have exhibitions all around the world. Sculpture is an important art form in Aurukun. The traditional soft wood carvings were often used for ceremonial purposes.

Tourists who come to Aurukun often camp or spend their time walking in the bush or fishing. There are several swimming holes in the area.
