Situated in the north-eastern region of the city of Brisbane, Albion is a small suburb of fewer than 2,000 people. The area has a variety of building styles including original workers cottages. There are also several modern brick-built houses. Albion is the home of the Albion Park Raceway established in the 1880’s as a horse and greyhound racing circuit.

History

The area was named after the Albion Hotel, using an ancient word meaning England. The word was, in turn, was taken from the Latin word for “white stone”. One of the area’s first industries was stone quarrying. The builder of the Albion Hotel, Thomas Hayselden, used the name for the hotel because the quarry stone in the area reminded him England’s white cliffs.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

Albion has much heritage-listed buildings including a flour mill, several shops and cottages, and a former Lodge Hall. The Breakfast Creek Bridge and many of the public buildings in Albion are also listed heritage sites.

Transport in the township is provided by the Queensland Rail City Network. There are also good road links and an Airport nearby. There was a tram line in the area until it ceased working in 1969.
