Aitkenvale is a commercial and residential suburb in Townsville, Queensland. It is often thought of as the second central business district in the Townsville area.

History

The suburb is named after Thomas Aitken, the original grantee of Portion 38. He began subdividing the property in 1880’s. He put 440 quarter-acre residential properties on the market in 1885. In 1867, he founded a dairy farm.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

The area is home to two of Townsville’s biggest shopping centres. The main shopping centre is Stockland Townsville, which has department stores, restaurants and grocery stores. It is also houses branches of numerous companies.

It is mainly residential, but has some light industrial warehouses and workshops in the north-eastern corner. It has three schools, three parks and a public library. Illich Park houses the Centrals Rugby League.
