Yagoona is a suburb of south-western Sydney. It is 20 kilometres south-west of Sydney’s CBD. It has a population of over 16,000.

History

The area was once home to the Bediagal people.

Many Irish rebels were transported to the area from Ireland in the late 1700s. It became known as ‘Irish Town’. It became suburbs Yagoona, Bass Hill, and North Bankstown.

St Matthew’s Anglican Church was built in 1861. It was to cater for the Protestants of the district and function as a school.

Yagoona was declared a suburb in 1927. The word ‘Yagoona’ is Aboriginal in origin. It is purported to mean ‘today’.

Yagoona was the site of the first McDonald’s restaurant to open in Australia in 1971. It closed in 1994.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

Yagoona has a commercial area near the railway station. This includes restaurants, supermarkets, and a post office. Large shopping centres in neighbouring suburbs Bass Hill and Bankstown are close by.

In 1963, the Westfield Group built a supermarket on a vacant lot on the highway. The store remains a supermarket.

Yagoona has several large parks. All contain various sporting facilities and play equipment.
