Woonona is a suburb in the Illawarra coastal plain. It is located around 11km from Wollongong and has a population of over 10,800 people.

History

Prior to European settlement, the area had been home to the Dharawal indigenous people for over 20,000 years. Settlement began in the form of land grants in around 1830 though the area was thought to be one of the very first sites in which Captain James Cook attempted to land in 1770.

Farming and timber cutting dominated the early economy, but it was the start of coal mining in 1857 that spurred an influx of new residents and led to further development.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

Woonona has a thriving commercial area situated along the highway and the suburb also has many historic buildings.

There is also a beautiful beach which offers perfect conditions for surfing, with many visiting to ride the famous ‘Dorrigo Ave’ break.
