Wisemans Ferry is a small town on the Hawkesbury River in New South Wales. It is 75 kilometres north-west of Sydney CBD. The population is circa 158.
History
Once known as Lower Portland Headland, Wisemans Ferry takes its name from Solomon Wiseman. Wiseman, a former convict, was granted the land in 1817. He founded the first ferry service across the Hawkesbury River in 1827. This was to supply convicts who were building the Great North Road with provisions. The ferry crossing is the oldest in New South Wales and perhaps the whole of Australia.
