History

Whickham, a suburb of Newcastle upon Tyne in England, inspired the town’s name. However, the town’s name was misspelled, excluding the first ‘h’.

In 1870, a resident named James Hammell fought for the town to be gazetted. It achieved this status in 1871. As a result, Hammell became the town’s first mayor.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

The town’s architecture reflects that of different English eras. The Edwardian era inspired Wickham Public School built in 1904. Victorian and Gothic architecture influenced other buildings in town. Travelling in town and to Newcastle is easy. The town serviced by Newcastle Buses and Ferries. There is also a light rail into Newcastle.

Wickham is well represented in Newcastle cricket competitions. The local district team is called the HamWicks. It combines players from Wickham and the nearby suburb of Hamilton.
