The West Pennant Hills suburb of Sydney is located 25km north-west of the City’s central business district. It sits within The Hornsby Shire and The Hills Shire local government areas. The region is mainly a residential suburb but there is a commercial area too. The population of West Pennants Hills is almost 16,000 people.
History
The area where the centre is located was named Thompsons Corner after the ex-convict Andrew Thompson who was given one of the original land grants in the area. The first school was opened near to what was then a trading point but was later relocated near the Railway Station in 1925.
During its early years, West Pennant Hills was a centre for timber sawing and there were also several sawpits dotted around the area. It was as late as the 1990s that the last sawmill in the suburb was demolished at the bottom of hill road.
Lifestyle and Entertainment
The area is well known for the Cumberland State Forest and the Koala Park Sanctuary. Both of these attractions are popular venues with visitors into the suburb. There is a primary and a public school in the suburb and a commercial area. There is also as shopping area on Coonara Avenue which includes a Woolworth’s and several restaurants.
There is an IBM office in the region and the company has initiated a regeneration programme in the area. This has been developed to assist in the protection of the Sydney Blue Gum High Forest and other areas of natural beauty.
