Based in New South Wales, Waterloo is an inner-city suburb of Sydney. It is 4 kilometres south of the Sydney CBD. According to the 2011 census, it has a population of more than 10,600 people.

History

Waterloo is named for the 1815 Battle of Waterloo.

In the 1820s Waterloo began supporting industrial operations. These included a paper mill and a flour mill.

Waterloo is historically a working-class region.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

Waterloo has become gentrified in the past twenty years. There is a rising business district focusing on technology. Much green space has been built, including parks.

The suburb contains a mix of public and private housing apartments. These include tall residential towers.

There is a large area of 19th century terrace and cottage housing. It has been declared Waterloo Urban Conservation Area. Development is encouraged to work with the existing heritage style.

The Waterloo Skate Park is a modern park. It was purpose-built to resemble popular urban skate sites including Sydney’s Martin Place.
