Warwick Farm is a suburb on the outskirts of Sydney. It is 30km west of the Sydney Central Business District and has a population of over 4,000.

History

Irish political prisoners arrived in the area in 1798, and 40-acre plots of land were distributed amongst them 21 years later. The name Warwick Farm dates back to John Hawley Stroud who named his plot of land after Warwick in England. This plot is now the Warwick Farm Racecourse.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

Warwick Farm has several famous landmarks including the Warwick Farm Racecourse and a replica of the Sydney Harbour Bridge.

Warwick Farm was home to a motor racing course, the Warwick Farm Raceway, on the site of the racecourse from 1960 until 1973. It hosted the Australian Grand Prix and other large motor racing events. However, it was too expensive to run and provided little return for the Australian Jockey Club, and so it was forced to close.
