Wallsend is a suburb in the local government area of the City of Newcastle. It is 11km from Newcastle’s central business district and has a population of over 12,300 people.

History

The land where Wallsend now lies was once a part of a bigger area known to indigenous people as Barahineban. It was named Wallsend after another place in England which was also a mining town and bordered a city called Newcastle!

The new name was given in the 1850s when Alexander Brown bought the land to establish a colliery. The coal produced by the mine was renowned for its quality and the area quickly began to prosper.

Wallsend is a commercial hub with many stores, restaurants and local business located on the main street. Elsewhere, there is a busy shopping centre called the Plaza Stockland which is popular with both residents and visitors to the area.
