History

The Danggadi people are the original inhabitants of Walcha. In 1818, an explorer called John Oxley made his way through the area. During his visit, he named the Apsley River.

1832 saw the arrival of European settlers. Many were squatters were looking for pastures for their sheep. Walcha achieved town status in 1878. By 1900, Walcha had four blacksmiths, four hotels, and a tannery.

Walcha boasts many historical and natural features. These features include Apsley Gorge National Park, Ohio Homestead, and Walcha Courthouse. The town is incredibly proud of its countryside. Gorges, cliffs, and waterfalls create a unique landscape.
