Wahroonga is an upper North Shore suburb of Sydney, NSW. It is 22 kilometres north-west of the Sydney. It has a population of over 16,700.

History

The area was once home to the Kuringgai people. ‘Wahroonga’ is an Aboriginal word meaning ‘our home’.

Wahroonga was first settled by Europeans in 1822. It was heavily forested with many tall trees. Many trees were cleared and orchards were planted.

Wahroonga railway station opened in 1890. The suburb became a popular place for holiday residences with large gardens. Wahroonga Post Office opened on 15 October 1896.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

Wahroonga has many beautiful parks and bushland areas. Parks include The Glade. It has two tennis courts, a half basketball court and a large sporting oval.

Ku-ring-gai Chase National Park is located north of Wahroonga. It is the second oldest national park in Australia. It is very popular, offering walking tracks and picnic spots. The park has a large number of the known Aboriginal sites in the Sydney area. These include rock carvings.

Wahroonga is known for its tree-lined, shady streets. These include Burns Road, Water Street and Billyard Avenue.
