The sleepy town of Urunga is on the Mid North Coast of New South Wales. Located in the Bellingen Shire, it is 505km north-east of Sydney. The population is 3,020.

History

Urunga is an Aboriginal phrase meaning ‘long white sands’. Prior to the European settlement, the land was inhabited by the Gumbainggar peoples. In 1841, William Miles, a stockman from Kempsey was the first European to enter the Bellingen Valley. He exploited the area’s abundance of cedar trees which heralded a ‘tree rush’.

Farmers followed the timber cutters who then used the land to grow maize and to graze dairy cattle.

Urunga is a holiday gem and perfect for those looking for the quiet life. Bypassed by the Pacific Highway, the area has managed to elude the commercialism that has touched much of the NSW north coast.
