Tuncurry is a coastal town in the Mid North Coast region of NSW. It is 308 kilometres north of Sydney. It has a population of over 5,800.

History

The first land grant in this area was in 1875. The town became ‘Tuncurry’ in 1891. It means ‘plenty of fish’. It officially became a village in 1893.

Early industry included timber cutting and sawmills.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

A large bridge across Wallis Lake links Tuncurry to its twin town, Forster. Forster is the larger of the two towns. The bridge was built in 1959. It replaced the ferry service in place since 1890.

Tuncurry is known for its beaches. Swimming, surfing and fishing are popular pursuits.

It is a four hour drive from Sydney. This makes it a popular holiday spot year-round. Tourism is a major industry in the town. Thousands of tourists arrive in the warmer months and school holidays.

Nine Mile Beach and Tuncurry Rockpool are popular swimming holes.

Tuncurry has a large range of shops including supermarkets. It has a cinema which screens new release movies.
