Welcome to Tumbarumba, NSW

Tumbarumba, or ‘Tumba’ to the locals, is a small town in New South Wales, 480km southwest of Sydney. On the edge of the Riverina and South West Slopes region of the Snowy Mountains, it has a population of around 1,500.

History

The town’s thought to get its name from Wiradjuri “dhamba dhamba” meaning “very soft”. It may also get its name from the Aboriginal words for “hollow sounding ground”, “thunder”, “sound” or “place of big trees”.

Tumbarumba was set up in the late 1850s after the discovery of gold in the area. The Post Office opened in 1860 but had the slightly different spelling Tumbarumba until 1915.
When the gold mining industry petered out in the 1930s, the town’s economy began to depend on tourism and agriculture.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

The area is a convenient base for tourists visiting the Western Snowy Mountains area. It hosts a few annual events. These include the Tumbarumba Rodeo, Tumbafest, and Tumbarumba Tastebuds.
