Located 30 kilometres west of the Sydney central business district, Toongabbie is an attractive suburb in New South Wales. It has a population of 13,003 and is often called Toonie and Toonga Bay.

History

The word Toongabbie is Aboriginal and means “place by the water.” Toongabbie is known as the third mainland settlement area after the British occupation of Australia began in 1788. The locals in the area didn’t have direct access to any trains until the 1880s. A local post office was opened in 1887 after residents set up a campaign to make it happen.

Toongabbie had electricity for the first time in the mid-1920s. A connection to gas came in the mid-1960s.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

Portico Plaza is the town’s main shopping centre with over 40 independent stores. The suburb is home to Toongabbie railway station, which is on the North Shore, Northern and Western line of the Sydney Trains Network. Bus services to Blacktown, Seven Hills, Parramatta and Westmead are also available.
