Swansea is a commercial centre with a population of 4,638. It sits on the shores of both Lake Macquarie and the Pacific Ocean.

History

People have lived in the Swansea area for at least 7,800 years. The Aboriginal population had dwindled to a single family by the 1870s. A reservation set aside for that family is now known as Black Ned’s Bay.

Swansea used to be called Pelican Flat. It took its current name in 1887. The name likely comes from the city in Wales. At one point, Swansea was home to many small coal mines.

Coal mining remains a major industry in the area. Other local industries include fishing, boating, and tourism. Tourists, fishers, and boaters all enjoy Swansea’s many sandy beaches. The town offers excellent access to both the Pacific Ocean and Lake Macquarie.
