Sutherland is a suburb in New South Wales with a population of over 9,900. It is situated 30 kilometres south of Sydney’s central business district and has lots of beautiful parks.

History

No one is certain how Sutherland got its name. Some believe that it comes from the seaman, Forby Sutherland who died on Captain Cook’s voyage. Even those the spelling isn’t the same, others believe that the name comes from the Parish of Sutherland.

In the 1800s, the railway line was built. At the time, the people who lived in Sutherland lived in tents in the bush. In 1866, the area only had four buildings including the station, master’s residence, the railway keeper’s cottage and a general store.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

Sutherland is mainly built up of lots of houses and a shopping centre near to the station. The area has a community centre, government council office and a library.

There are some schools and churches but Sutherland is mostly known for its beautiful selection of parks including Prince Edward Park, Sutherland Community Gardens and Leonay Street Reserve.
